Eagle Pass Ranch

Eagle Pass Ranch has undertaken many pioneering efforts in their 25-year history on the Great Plains of South Dakota. Beginning with a mixed lot of commercial cattle, they searched far and wide for the best breeding stock available and now run one of the finest herds of purebred cattle in the country.

Eagle Pass Ranch continued their pioneering ways by becoming one of the first ranches in the U.S. to test their stock and select for feed efficiency. Steve Munger, who manages day-to-day operations on the ranch and is also part owner, says this about feed efficiency technology:

“It’s expensive, but we as farmers and ranchers need to do a better job of managing our resources in the future. Cattle eat a lot compared with other protein sources and that puts a lot of strain on our local ecosystems, especially in confinement situations. I believe that if we can breed cattle that eat less to gain the same and raise them in a more natural environment, it will put us closer to a more sustainable future.”
